What is Noom? Is it Good? Does it Work?

Many people find it challenging to achieve their weight-loss objectives, especially without the proper advice. Personal trainers might be costly, but individuals are more eager than ever to experiment with weight loss approaches. While not intended to be flawless, a macro-tracking tool or an exercise app may tremendously help your efforts. You may have heard a few positive Noom reviews and are intrigued about what it entails.

Noom is a weight-loss and exercise program that claims to help users “quit dieting” and get “life-long results.” Noom bills itself as the “final weight-loss program you’ll ever need,” according to its website. Instead of teaching you how to exercise or what to eat, the Noom app uses psychological concepts to assist you in developing good habits that will help you lose weight and keep it off.

Noom will offer you a daily calorie count when you meet your objectives. It will also provide you with advice on how to enhance your diet and exercise routine. It employs a color-coded database to categorize a million food products based on their nutritional density. However, some opponents argue that the daily calorie goal is too low and that food labeling may lead to disordered eating, particularly in people with a history of eating disorders.

Do you want to know more about the Noom app and how it differs from other weight reduction programs? Here are some reasons why some dietitians feel it has potential—with a few caveats.

What Exactly is Noom?

Noom, as opposed to a typical diet, is a mobile health app subscription service that encourages users to adopt behavioral adjustments to live a better lifestyle. Noom is not a new concept. It first appeared in 2008 as a basic fitness and calorie tracker. However, by 2016, the program has incorporated a psychology and behavioral change component, user support groups, and personal coaches.

Noom has a team of behavioral health professionals who have researched cancer, diabetes prevention and management, hypertension, and other topics to create a curriculum that addresses the underlying causes of weight loss issues. Noom promises to assist users in focusing on their attitude before focusing on food.

“Once you choose the things you’re ready to focus on, your attitude will help you establish new brain connections over time to modify your behaviors,” according to the company’s philosophy. Today, losing weight the Noom way includes assessing eating habits, regulating food-related emotions, practicing responsibility, and implementing lifestyle changes that can result in long-term weight reduction.

How Does Noom Function?

How Does Noom Function?

Starting the Noom diet plan entails answering questions that no other diet plan has asked me.

1. Take A Questionnaire To Get A Personalized Strategy

The program begins with a 10-minute online survey that includes standard questions about your height, weight, gender, age, and why you want to lose weight. It also inquires how physically active you are, how frequently you eat, and whether you are predisposed to particular health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, or depression. Then, to examine habits and behaviors, questions such as “Have any life events contributed to weight increase in the previous several years?” and “Why are you uncertain about meeting your weight reduction goals?” appear.

2. Pay, Install The App On Your Smartphone And Create An Account.

You must download the Noom app once you’ve opted to join the program and paid the price. It is now only available on iPhones (12.4 or later) and Android phones (version 6 or later). It is compatible with iPad and Android tablets, although its utility is restricted because tablets do not often include motion sensors (Noom has a step counter). After installing the app, you’ll be prompted to sign in with the email address you used to register for the program.

3. Meet Your Coaches, Sign Up For Classes, And Create A Calorie Budget

Noom expects you to complete 10 mini-lessons on psychology and behavioral change over 16 weeks. You instantly pick if you want to devote a minimum of five minutes to a maximum of sixteen minutes every day to the classes. After around two days, you’ll be assigned a goal coach who will contact you twice weekly to check in, inquire about your progress, and give motivating notes.

You’ll be allocated a group coach and a peer group a few days into the program. The group coach moderates the peer group chat publishes weight reduction recommendations, and occasionally reacts to individual postings. The goal coach and the group coach are Noom-trained and have either a bachelor’s or associate’s degree and 2,000 hours of wellness experience.

Your calorie constraints are dependent on the information you provide. Noom’s diabetes prevention program—the first mobile health program accredited by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for offering an evidence-based type 2 diabetes prevention program—might be recommended for some obese and pre-diabetic persons.

Your tailored plan gives a daily calorie budget (the minimal number of calories required to operate each day) and asks you to track your meals and physical activity daily. You could also devote two to ten minutes daily to reading brief articles on positive thinking, mindful eating, and stress management.

On top of that, Noom features a step counter, so as long as you have your phone with you all day, you’ll know how many total steps you did. The app encourages you to record your daily blood pressure, glucose levels, and water intake.

The Noom plan is meant to last 16 weeks, but you may purchase up to a year at a time for weight reduction and maintenance. My calorie allowance was 1,250 calories per day for 16 weeks to achieve my 12-pound weight loss objective. When I logged my foods, the app told me how many calories I had remaining for the day in each food category. When I went over my calorie budget, there was no reprimand, simply encouragement to stick with the plan and lessons to help me figure out what caused my bad eating day (or week).

What Foods are Allowed on the Noom Diet?

What Foods are Allowed on the Noom Diet?

This is the only diet I’ve tried that didn’t exclude any foods or dietary groupings. Any limitations are self-imposed. While Noom does provide vegan, gluten-free, and low-carb diet alternatives, it never identifies things as harmful or off-limits.

Noom believes that food weight, not calories, influences how full you feel; hence, they employ a color-coded food system that prioritizes meals based on caloric density (CD). The higher the CD of food, the more water it contains. As a result, consuming low-CD meals fills you up faster and with fewer calories.

  • Green Foods: Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are all low-calorie dense foods that are rich in water content and contain the most nutrients.
  • Yellow Foods: Because they include more calories and fewer nutrients than green foods, lean meats, beans, and low-fat dairy products should be consumed in moderation.
  • Red Foods: Red meats, processed meals, and full-fat cheese are the foods with the highest calories and the least quantity of good nutrients. These foods provide 25% of your daily calories in one-fourth to one-half cup amounts.

The Noom diet plan never states you can’t consume “red” items; it merely advises you to limit your intake. Every time you track food, Noom automatically categorizes it by color, allowing you to see which aspects of your diet require improvement.

Let me assist you if you need help wrapping your head around this eating style. Noom determined that I required roughly 1,250 calories per day to operate to drop 12 pounds in 16 weeks. It advised me to have 300 calories of “red” meals, 540 calories of “yellow” foods, and the remaining 410 calories of “green” foods.

So if I ate a glazed doughnut for breakfast (260 calories), I’d meet my daily red food need. However, I still had 990 calories to distribute among “yellow” and “green” items. For lunch, how about a light salad with grilled chicken? So why not? Dinner with shrimp and grilled vegetables? Absolutely. Do you feel bad about the doughnut? There are none.

EndNote

It is not as easy as limiting your intake of particular meals to stay active and maintain a healthy weight. It is especially difficult when old beliefs and behaviors must be broken. How does Noom function? It is not a secret. The software offers a unique and intriguing approach to fitness and health, entirely based on the power of the mind. It can assist you in achieving positive outcomes on your fitness path because it is supported by study and psychology.
